From Proto-Norse *ᚨᛁᚦᚨᛉ (*aiþaʀ) (attested in the name ᚨᛁᚦᚨᛚᚨᛏᚨᛉ (aiþalataʀ)), from Proto-Germanic *aiþaz, whence also Old English āþ (English oath), Old Frisian ēth, Old Saxon ēth, Old High German eid, Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐌸𐍃 (aiþs). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁óytos (“oath”).
