Inherited from Ottoman Turkish هكیم (hekim), vulgarized form of earlier حكیم (ḥakim, “The All-Wise God, very wise, a sage, philosopher, a physician, deeply wise and true”), from Arabic حَكِيم (ḥakīm, “wise, acting with prudence, sage, physician”), verbal noun of حَكَمَ (ḥakama, “to exercise authority, to command, to bid, to rule”).
