== Old Norse ==
=== Etymology ===
The adverb seems to be a petrified locative of the noun heima. Although this noun is a neuter n-stem, it is likely cognate with Old High German heima, Old Saxon hēme, and Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌼𐍉𐍃 (haimōs, nom./acc. plural), all feminine ō-stems.
Compare similar old locatives Old High German heime, heimi and Old Saxon hēme (“at home”), which however are from the related Proto-Germanic *haimaz.
