Uncertain first part, possibly from Old Norse feimr (“foam”), from Proto-Germanic *faimaz, with the river suffix -und f, or -mundr m.
Jacob Breda Bull theorised that the name might come from Old Norse *Fimb-undr (“fiver river lake”), from fimm (“five”) + -unnr (“wave”), where the suffix had been used in the meaning of mountain river.
