== Italian ==
=== Etymology ===
Even though some souces says that it comes from Latin Bauli, many scholars argue it actually comes from Medieval Latin Bacula/Vacula, an alteration of Latin adjective vacuus + diminutive suffix -ulus, from an expression terra vacua. Compare the Cilentan word sbàculu, originating from the same Latin word.
The alteration of V to B comes from the local betacism phenomenon. This hypothesis originates from studying medieval and XVIII century legal sources, always using the form Bacula. The other form Bacoli might have originate as a way of giving prestige to the name by making it more similar to the Latin one.
