Maybe from an (incorrect) abbreviation of Old Danish thjanestehjon (“household”), or related to þý (“female thrall”), from Old Norse þjóna, þéna, from Proto-Germanic *þewanōną (“to serve”). The verb is ultimately derived from the noun Proto-Germanic *þewaz (“servant”). See modern Danish træl (“thrall, slave”), and tjene (“to serve”).
