From Middle Dutch truerich, from Middle High German trūrec, from Old High German trūreg, trūrag, from Proto-Germanic *dreuzagaz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrews- (“to break, break off, crumble”). Equivalent to treuren (“to grieve”) + -ig (“-y”).
Cognate with Low German trurig, German traurig, English dreary.
