From Proto-Finnic *tahtas, borrowed from an Indo-European language (probably Proto-Balto-Slavic *taištas), compare Proto-Slavic *těsto and Proto-Celtic *taisto-. Cognate to Karelian tahas, Livvi tahtas, Ludian tahtaz, Veps tahtaz.
