Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit تكانت (tagant, “forest”), from Proto-Berber [Term?] (“forest”), possibly a verbal noun of Proto-Berber *ʔ-g-w (“to be empty”) (whence Tashelhit ugu (“to be empty”). Unrelated to gn (“to lie, to sleep”).
Cognate with Central Atlas Tamazight tagant (“forest”), Tarifit taɣent (“forest”), Ghomara tagant (“bush, douma plant”), Zenaga gänä, taʔgänt, ägunnih (“forest, large forest”).
