Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwes- (“to puff, sigh”), in which case it is cognate with English quarrel, wheeze, Icelandic hvæsa (“to hiss”) and Sanskrit श्वसिति (śvasiti, “to puff”), Pashto ساه (sāh, “breath, blow, puff, soul, spirit, essence”), Baluchi ساہ (sáh, “breath, blow, essence”).
