Uncertain. Outside of Halmahera, compare Makasar pariama (“century, era”), Wolio pariama (“western star, Venus?”), Gorontalo poliama (“year”) and Muna pomoilo (“time of year of the Pleiades?”).
The sense 'year' is derived from the regularity with which the Pleiades appear in the sky, which served as an indication for planting crops, among other things, marking the cycle of a year.
