genune

== Romanian == === Alternative forms === genună gerune — regional, Transylvania gerure, geroe — archaic === Etymology === Probably from Latin caerula (“pertaining to the sea”) (likely through an initial early Romanian form *cerure or *cerură, which underwent changes due to dissimilation and other processes, perhaps derhotacization; see some of the above dialectal or archaic alternative forms such as gerure, which were more conservative in pronunciation); some variants possibly derive from the form caerulea. Another theory instead suggests a Vulgar Latin root *girōnem / gyrōnem, from *gyrō (“whirlpool”), presumably stemming ultimately from Ancient Greek γῦρος (gûros). === Noun === genune f (plural genuni) (often literary, poetic) chasm, abyss, precipice Synonyms: prăpastie, abis, râpă (archaic) sea Synonym: mare ==== Declension ==== === References ===
