Inherited from Vulgar Latin *vorūclum, by dissimilation of *volūclum or metathesis of *volūcrum; compare Classical Latin involūcrum (“covering, wrapping”) and Late Latin volūcrum (“pouch”), ultimately from volvō (“to roll, tumble”). Doublet of gorullo, a borrowing from Asturleonese.
