Borrowed from Middle Low German büxe, bükse, or from Old Frisian büxe, bükse; cf. German dialectal buxe, Swedish byxa, byxor, first mentioned in 17th-century dictionaries. The original meaning was “goat leather pants” (cf. Middle Low German buck “male goat,” “buck”), later extended to all kinds of pants.
