== Afar == === Alternative forms === (Southern Afar) arrabá === Etymology === Ultimately from Proto-East Cushitic *ʕaŋ-lab (literally; "middle of cheeks"), though likely borrowed, as ʔ is not a regular reflex of *ʕ. The proto-word is a compound with the first element preserved in qangaxxa (“mouthful of food”) and qangar (“roof of the mouth”). See also Somali carrab.
