From Proto-Polynesian *talamea with irregular loss of /t/. By surface analysis, (t)ala (“thorn, spike”) + mea (“light red/brown”), literally “[it has] light red/brown spikes [on it]”, referring to the venomous thornlike spines that cover its upper surface.
