From Proto-Indo-European *kwep- (“wish”). Cognate with Latin cupiō (“wish”), Sanskrit कुप्यति (kupyati, “be moved, excited, agitated”), Old Church Slavonic кꙑпѣти (kypěti, “to boil”), Lithuanian kūpė́ti (“to boil”).
