Borrowed from Spanish de Azara (surname of Nicolas de Azara), from Azara (a municipality in Huesca, Spain), borrowed from Arabic الصَّخْرَة (aṣ-ṣaḵra, “the rock”), definite inflection of صَخْرَة (ṣaḵra, “boulder, rock”), the singulative of صَخْر (ṣaḵr, “rock, stone”), from the root ص خ ر (ṣ ḵ r), which relates to rock or stone.
Coined by Spanish botanist Hipólito Ruiz López and Spanish botanist José Antonio Pavón in 1794.
