voida (“can, to be able”) + -pua. In some dialects, this can also mean the opposite ("to recover, recuperate, grow stronger"), while the standard meaning is mostly found in the southeastern dialects and may have been popularized by the Kalevala. The coexistence of these two meanings is also found in Karelian voipuo.
