Borrowed from Arabic وَزْنَة (wazna, “particular weight”). Compare also Persian وزنة (vazna, vaznat, “weight; a small balance; a powder flask”). Such powder flasks initially looked like small weights; the sewing of the gazyr onto the front-garment began only later.
