vuo + -ma; the loss of v- may represent an archaism, or it may, as Kallio (2007) suggests, instead be a sign that the word was borrowed from Sami (such as Early Proto-Samic *ōm̀ã, later *vuomē, compare Northern Sami vuopmi).
