Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish اوچماق (uçmaq), واچماغ (uçmağ), from Proto-Turkic *uštmag, from Sogdian [script needed] (ʼwštmʼχ, “paradise”). Sogdian borrowing underwent a semantic merge with uçmaq (“to fly”), thence the parallels.
Cognate with Kazakh ұжмақ (ūjmaq), Southern Altai учмак (učmak), etc. Doublet of behişt.
