From Proto-Indo-European *terp- (“to be stiff”). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *tьrpnǫti (“to go numb”) (whence Polish cierpnąć (“id”)), Latin torpeō (“to be stiff”); see the Latin for more cognates.
The "melt" sense is from the same origin as the "go numb" sense, with sense development "to shiver, tremble" > either "go numb" or "melt".
