Related to the verb tikė́ti (“to believe”). Cognate with Latvian tikrs (“good, sound”). Could be also cognate to Proto-Indo-European *-teros (“especially such”), with maybe epenthetic /k/ similarly to that as in krikštas (“baptism”) (from Old Church Slavonic крьстъ (krĭstŭ)).
