=== Etymology ===
Sino-Vietnamese word from 碳 (“carbon”) and 氣 (“gas”). The Chinese character 碳 (thán) is composed of 石 (thạch, “rock”, chemical radical for "non-gassy" nonmetal elements) + 炭 (thán, “coal”), due to the carbonic makeup of coal. See also than đá (“coal”) and Than Đá (“Carboniferous”) which are from Chinese 石炭 (thạch thán, literally “rocky coal”). Compare Chinese 炭氣 / 炭气 (thán khí).
