From Caribbean Javanese telo, from Javanese ꦠꦺꦭ (téla), a variant of ꦏꦠꦺꦭ (katéla), a word for non-native tuberous plants that was borrowed from Portuguese Castela and thus ultimately derives from Latin castellum, making this a doublet of ketella, kasteel, chateau, Castilië, Kessel, and castellum.
