Cognate with Persian تنجیدن (tanjidan, “to squeeze, twist”), Old Armenian թանձր (tʻanjr, “thick, dense”), English tight, Old Norse þéttr (“close, thick”), Old Irish técht (“solidified”), Sanskrit तञ्च् (tañc, “to contract, coagulate”), and perhaps Hittite 𒋫𒈨𒅅𒍣 (tamekzi, “attaches”).
