Borrowed from Old East Slavic *долто (*dolto) (compare Russian долото́ (dolotó)), from Proto-Slavic *dōltò. Cognates include Karelian tauttu, Ludian talt, Veps taut. First mentioned in a Finnish dictionary in 1787.
