From sviger- (“in-law; denoting a family relationship created through marriage or cohabitation”) + bestemor (“grandmother”), literally “grandmother-in-law”. The combining form sviger- was borrowed from German schwieger- (“in-law”), ultimately from the older noun Schwieger (“mother-in-law”).
