From sviger- (“in-law; denoting a family relationship created through marriage or cohabitation”) + bestefar (“grandfather”), literally “grandfather-in-law”. The first element sviger- was borrowed from German schwieger- (“in-law”), ultimately from the older noun Schwieger (“mother-in-law”).
Compare Danish svigerbedstefar (“grandfather-in-law”), and Swedish svärmorfar and svärfarfar (“grandfather-in-law on the maternal and paternal side, respectively”).
