Given that the simplex is only attested in the works of the grammarian Festus, De Vaan suggests that it might have emerged as a back-formation the compound forms, such as dissipō. De Vaan further proposes that the term might connect to Lithuanian sùpti (“to rock, cradle”). Within Italic, the term is perhaps connected to Umbrian Supunne.
