skalbti
التعريفات والمعاني
== Lithuanian ==
=== Etymology ===
Apparently formed from an unattested iterative *skalbyti, from an archaic skel̃bti (“to wash”) (not to be confused with modern skélbti (“to announce, advertise”), which is from a different root), probably a b-extension of skélti (“to split, cleave”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kelH- (“to cut, to cleave”). The sense development would be "to cleave" > "to beat (clothes)" > "to wash". Cognates include Russian щель (ščelʹ, “crack”), Polish szczelina (“crack”) and Icelandic skilja (“to separate”).
