From Proto-Finnic *rëëhudak (related to Karelian riehuo and Veps rehuda). Further origin is disputed; theories include relation to riesa, borrowing from Proto-Germanic *rēsōną (compare Middle Dutch rasen), or an original sound-symbolic root.
