Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *pláutja, from Proto-Indo-European *plew- (“to flow, float”); lungs were perhaps viewed as "floating objects" in an anatomical context. Cognate with Latvian plàušas, Proto-Slavic *plūťè (“lung”), Ancient Greek πλεύμων (pleúmōn, “lung; jellyfish”).
