Inherited from Proto-Katuic *prɛɛŋ, from Proto-Austroasiatic *briəŋ (“rainbow”).
The two senses are related, since, as observed by Richard Watson, Saundra Watson & Cubuot Canxóiq (1979), "[...] ‘rainbows’ are believed to be manifestations of all of the souls from a particular graveyard reaching out to a place of water, because they are always thirsty."
