From Proto-West Germanic *uʀhaitō; equivalent to ōret + -a and thus cognate with Old High German urheizo. Originally an agent noun to āhātan (“to call forth”) (compare Gothic 𐌿𐍃𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (ushaitan, “to provoke, challenge”)). For the variation between -t- and -tt-, compare ǣmette, variant of ǣmete (“ant”).
