From Proto-Vietic *-ɲəːp (“dirty”); cognate with Tho [Cuối Chăm] ɲəːp⁷ and Chut [Rục] ɲə́ːp. Doublet of dớp.
Compare also Proto-Katuic *ɲəəp (“bad”), whence Pacoh nnhôp (“bad, ugly”) and Western Katu ɲəːp ("dirty, bad").
