From Proto-Cushitic *ɬa(a)ma. Cognates include Oromo lama, Sidamo lame, Somali lába, Daasanach naama, Awngi [Term?] (“laŋa”), and Iraqw tám (“three”).
At some point the irregular shift *l > n, but the original form is still present in some dialects as lammáy.
