From Proto-Cushitic [Term?]. Cognates include Saho lamma, Oromo lama, Sidamo lame, Somali lába, Daasanach naama and Iraqw tám (“three”).
At some point the irregular shift *l > n occurred, but the original form is still present in some dialects as lammáy.
