This verb combines three separate Proto-Athabaskan roots based on the grammatical number of its subject:
The singular forms are from Proto-Athabaskan *(h)aʷ; compare the cognate Navajo root -YÁ and the verb naaghá (“a singular subject goes”).
The dual forms are from Proto-Athabaskan *ʔatsʼ; compare Navajo -ʼÁÁZH/naaʼaash.
The plural forms are from Proto-Athabaskan *qαxʸ; compare Navajo -KAI/naakai.
