== Portuguese == === Alternative forms === malhada === Etymology === From malha, or from Old Galician-Portuguese mallado, from an Iberian Vulgar Latin *mac(u)lātus, from Latin macula. Compare Spanish majada. The origin of the "supporter of queen Maria II, liberal" sense is unclear. A popular theory postulates it was coined by partisans of Dom Miguel (Maria II's rival) in reference to an event where a mottled horse that was pulling Miguel's carriage went off-course, causing an accident. The "unruly" liberals, who disrespected Miguel's legitimacy were compared to this horse. === Pronunciation === === Participle === malhado (feminine malhada, masculine plural malhados, feminine plural malhadas) past participle of malhar === Adjective === malhado (feminine malhada, masculine plural malhados, feminine plural malhadas) mottled (coloured in patches), spotted, speckled, piebald threshed (of cereal) (Brazil, colloquial) fit, muscular Synonym: sarado === Noun === malhado m (plural malhados, feminine malhada, feminine plural malhadas) (historical) a supporter of the legitimacy of the queen Maria II of Portugal and her descendants Synonym: liberal Coordinate term: corcunda ==== Related terms ==== malha === Further reading === “malhado”, in Dicionário Aulete Digital (in Portuguese), Rio de Janeiro: Lexikon Editora Digital, 2008–2026 “malhado”, in Dicionário Priberam da Língua Portuguesa (in Portuguese), Lisbon: Priberam, 2008–2026
