Inherited from Middle French mélange, meslange, from Old French meslance, meslinges (“set of diverse elements”), apparently a borrowing from Frankish *misklingu (“mixture”), from Frankish *misklōn (“to mix”). Compare Old High German miskilunga (“mixture, mess”). Alternatively, derived natively from Old French mescler (“to mix”), from Early Medieval Latin misculare. Equivalent to mêler + -ange (either directly or by surface analysis).
