=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): /ˈluo̯deˣ/, [ˈluo̞̯de̞(ʔ)]
Rhymes: -uode
Syllabification(key): luo‧de
Hyphenation(key): luo‧de
=== Etymology 1 ===
From Proto-Finnic *loodëh (compare Estonian loe, Ingrian looe, loove, Karelian luuveh (“west; southwest”), Livonian lūod, Ludian luodeh (“west”), Veps lode (“northwest; west”), lodeh (“northwest; west”), Votic looõ (“northwest”)). Dialectally both the meanings “northwest” and “west” were found, the latter historically predominant in Eastern Finnish; the meaning in Standard Finnish was standardized to the former.
Of uncertain further origin; possibly akin to luoda and luo (possibly a verb with like *luotaa (“to descend”)), or alternatively of Germanic origin, like luode (etymology 2).
