From Proto-West Germanic *hlahhjan, either through an unrecorded Old Frisian form or otherwise via Middle Low German lachen. The usual Old Frisian verb was hlakkia, from Proto-Germanic *hlakkōną, which is continued in Mainland North Frisian lååke and West Frisian laitsje. The Insular North Frisian form corresponds to Saterland Frisian laachje.
