From Proto-Finnic *kokëdak (“to (go) see/check”) (compare Livonian ko’gtõ), probably from Proto-Uralic *koke- (“to see/check”) (compare Tundra Nenets хось (xosʹ°)). The original meaning of this word was probably “to (go) check (a fishing net)”, from which the more abstract senses have developed.
