Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kes- (“to cut”). Cognate with Karakhanid کـَسْماكْ (kesmēk, “to cut”), Turkish kesmek etc. The sense 'to fail, to flunk' is a semantic loan from Russian ре́зать (rézatʹ)/сре́зать (srézatʹ).
