From Proto-Finnic *kärpähinen, equivalent to dialectal kärväs (“fly egg”) + -(i)nen. Exact cognate with Ingrian kärpäin, Karelian kärbäne and Veps kärbhaine, more distantly Estonian kärbes, likely also Erzya карво (karvo), Moksha кару (karu), Eastern Mari карме (karme).
