From Proto-Italic *jū (“exclamation of joy”), from Proto-Indo-European *iū (“exclamation; yow!”), an onomatopoeic exclamation present in several Indo-European branches. Cognate with Ancient Greek ἰῡγή (iūgḗ, “howling, crying”), Middle High German jū (“exclamation of joy”), Dutch juichen (“to shout with joy”), English yowl. For the suffix, compare sībilō.
