Inherited from Ottoman Turkish استغنا or استغناء (istiġnā, “a being sufficiently rich to have no need of help”), from Arabic اِسْتِغْنَاء (istiḡnāʔ), verbal noun of اِسْتَغْنَى (istaḡnā, “to be rich; to do without”).
