Inherited from Ottoman Turkish استمك (istemek, “to wish for, ask for, want, require”), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (iste-, “to seek, search”), from earlier *iztemek, from Proto-Turkic *īŕ-te-mek (“to seek, pursue”), derived from *īŕ (“trace”), see iz (“trace”).
Cognate to irdelemek (“to investigate”), Karakhanid اِسْتاماكْ (istēmēk, “to seek, pursue”), Old Uyghur [script needed] (iste-, “to search, investigate”).
