Either from the following:
From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *əmpu (“grandparent/grandchild (recipr.); ancestor; lord, master, owner”); compare Malay empu (“owner; to have”).
From Hokkien, possibly 引婆 (ín-pô), or 姆婆 (ḿ-pô) recorded in the Dictionario Hispanico Sinicum (1626-1642) as “ìn pō” and “m̄ pō”.
Zorc (1985) records both etymologies but finds the Chinese etymology as less likely.
